Fish Biryani -- Boneless Tilapia Biryani

I can't believe we have already finished a month long Marathon of cooking Biryani / Pulao and khichdi recipes with grains. What an amazing month of non stop blogging it was, I thoroughly enjoyed cooking and posting different types of dishes. For the final day I will be posting my family’s all time favorite dish Fish Biryani with boneless Tilapia Fillets.  This is one of my signature dishes where my friends also enjoy to the core. It was my dear husband’s idea to prepare this delicious biryani with fillets. It’s been more than a decade now that I have been preparing this dish for my family and friends.

I have used boneless Tilapia fish here, you can use any kind of fish you like. I suggest to marinate the fish overnight or for at least 6 hours for best results. So this special Fish Biryani goes to day 26 of Mega Marathon theme Biryani / Pulao / Khichdi recipes with grains.

Ingredients to Marinate Fish:

Boneless Tilapia fish 4 fillets -make each into 4 pieces
Thick curd 1 cup
Fish Biryani masala 2 tbsp
Ginger Garlic paste 2 tsp
Chili powder 1 tbsp
Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
Green chili 6 slit
Chopped cilantro 1/2 cup
Chopped mint 1/2 cup
Salt to taste
Oil 1 tbsp

Ingredients  for Rice:

Basmati rice 3 cups
Oil 1 tbsp
Bay leaf 1
Cinnamon stick 2 inch
Cloves 5
Cardamom 3
Star Anise 1
Shah jeera 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste

Other Ingredients:

Large onion 2 sliced
Oil 1 1/2 tbsp
Butter / Ghee 2 tbsp
Chopped cilantro 1/4 cup for garnishing

Preparing Fish Curry:

I am using boneless Tilapia fillets for this recipe.
Make sure the fish pieces are not too small or else they will break.
Marinate fish pieces with all the ingredients mentioned under marination.
Marinate overnight or for at least 1 hour in refrigerator.
Heat oil in a deep flat pan and add sliced onions.
Fry till brown, remove 3/4 of them aside.
Add marinated fish fillets in the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes.
Add 1/4 cup water if you think u do not have enough gravy.
Slowly flip the fish pieces as they tend to break easily.
Once the fish is cooked and gravy is ready switch off flame and set aside to prepare rice.

Preparing Rice:

Wash and soak rice for 30 minutes.
Add all the whole masala's mentioned under ingredients for  rice.
Cook till the rice is 80 percent done.
Drain the water and set aside.

Layering rice to cook on dum:

Take a wide oven safe pan and add little ghee or butter and spread it all around the pan.
Now add 1/2 of the cooked rice.
Sprinkle some fried onions, chopped cilantro and fish curry.
Now add rest of the rice on top.
Sprinkle some fried onions and cilantro  again.
Cover with foil or lid. ( Make sure the pan is sealed properly )
Bake on 350 Degrees F for 45 minutes.
Remove and garnish with chopped cilantro and fried onions.
Serve hot with Raita.
