Mung dal Vada / Pesara Punukulu

Mung / Moong dal vada are the most popular recipe from Western India, specially Gujarat and Rajasthan. These pakoda / vada are made in some parts of South India too, however there are several other variations in preparing these vada. This is very simple yet delicious vada. No fermentaion required, just soak the dal for couple of hours grind with green chili, ginger, add chopped onion and cilantro and fry as vada or fritters. Here I have used yellow moong dal, click here to see the other vada recipe where I have used green moong dal.

This recipe goes to week 3, day 1 of Blogging Marathon 117 under the theme " Choose 1 ingredient and make 3 different course". I choose moong dal / mung dal and for the first day it will be a snack dish....

Ingredients:

Yellow mung dal 2 cup
Green chili 3
Ginger root 1 inch
Chopped cilantro 1/2 cup
Chopped onion 1/2 cup
Chopped curry leaves 1 spoon
Cumin seeds 1 tsp
Salt to taste
Oil for deep frying
Rice flour / Sooji  2 tbsp

Preparation:

Wash and soak mung / moong dal for 4-5 hours.
Remove 1 spoon dal aside and grind rest of the soaked  dal along with green chili, ginger and cumin seeds to smooth paste without adding water.
Transfer the paste to mixing bowl, add rice flour / sooji , salt to taste, chopped onion, cilantro and curry leaves.
Also add 1 spoon soaked dal which we removed aside, mix  everything well.
Heat oil in deep frying pan, using spoon drop little batter at a time in the hot oil like small dumplings.
Keep stirring so that dumplings / vada fries well on all the sides.
Fry till nice and crisp, remove and place them on paper towel to remove excess oil.
Serve hot with green chutney or coconut chutney.
